New research from OpenAI and MIT Media Lab indicates that heavy chatbot usage, particularly of ChatGPT, is correlated with increased loneliness and reduced socialization. Studies involving thousands of users revealed that those who frequently use ChatGPT may experience greater social isolation and develop unhealthy habits, such as substituting real conversations with AI interactions. One study tracked nearly 1,000 individuals over a month, finding that "power users" of ChatGPT reported feeling lonelier and more dependent on the AI.

Researchers also examined the impact of ChatGPT's personality on users. They discovered that users interacting with a neutral, unemotional version of ChatGPT felt lonelier compared to those engaging with a friendly, empathetic version. This suggests that while a more engaging AI might offer some comfort, it cannot replace genuine human connection. Experts predict that ChatGPT could follow a similar path to social media, initially appearing harmless but potentially leading to increased loneliness and emotional dependency over time.

Anthropic has announced that its AI assistant Claude can now search the web. This enhancement allows Claude to provide users with more up-to-date and relevant responses by expanding its knowledge base beyond its initial training data. It may seem like a minor feature update, but it's not. It is available to paid Claude 3.7 Sonnet users by toggling on "web search" in their profile settings.

This integration emphasizes transparency, as Claude provides direct citations when incorporating information from the web, enabling users to easily fact-check sources. Claude aims to streamline the information-gathering process by processing and delivering relevant sources in a conversational format. Anthropic believes this update will unlock new use cases for Claude across various industries, including sales, finance, research, and shopping.

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT now has 400 million weekly active users, marking a substantial increase from 300 million in December 2024. This growth of 33% in just three months highlights the platform's increasing popularity across both consumer and enterprise sectors. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's COO, attributed this surge to word-of-mouth referrals and the perceived utility of the product. In addition to individual users, OpenAI has also seen its enterprise client base double, reaching 2 million paying business users, which includes major companies like Uber, Morgan Stanley, and T-Mobile.

OpenAI's API traffic has also experienced significant growth, doubling in the past six months. Notably, the usage of the "o3" reasoning model has increased fivefold, demonstrating a growing reliance on OpenAI's models in software development and enterprise applications. Despite facing competition from companies like DeepSeek, OpenAI continues to solidify its position as a leading AI provider. Lightcap compared the trajectory of OpenAI's enterprise business to the early growth of cloud services pioneered by Amazon Web Services.
