New research from OpenAI and MIT Media Lab indicates that heavy chatbot usage, particularly of ChatGPT, is correlated with increased loneliness and reduced socialization. Studies involving thousands of users revealed that those who frequently use ChatGPT may experience greater social isolation and develop unhealthy habits, such as substituting real conversations with AI interactions. One study tracked nearly 1,000 individuals over a month, finding that "power users" of ChatGPT reported feeling lonelier and more dependent on the AI.

Researchers also examined the impact of ChatGPT's personality on users. They discovered that users interacting with a neutral, unemotional version of ChatGPT felt lonelier compared to those engaging with a friendly, empathetic version. This suggests that while a more engaging AI might offer some comfort, it cannot replace genuine human connection. Experts predict that ChatGPT could follow a similar path to social media, initially appearing harmless but potentially leading to increased loneliness and emotional dependency over time.
