Google is rolling out AI-powered scam detection features for Android devices to protect users from conversational fraud. These features target scams that start harmlessly but evolve into harmful situations, where scammers often use spoofing techniques to disguise their real numbers. The AI models, developed in partnership with financial institutions, flag suspicious patterns and deliver real-time warnings during conversations, ensuring user privacy by running entirely on the device. Users can then dismiss, report, or block the sender. This enhancement builds upon existing protections, with over 1 billion Chrome users already benefiting from Safe Browsing's Enhanced Protection mode that uses AI to identify phishing and scam techniques.
This AI driven security system scans texts from strangers and flags potentially dangerous messages, giving users a 'Likely Scam' alert. Real-time scam alerts are also being introduced for phone calls, analyzing speech patterns to detect fraudulent phrases and buzzing the device if detected. This feature is initially launching in English in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, with broader expansion planned. For Pixel 9+ users in the U.S. the call audio is processed but Google will beep at the start and during the call to notify participants the feature is on. The company assures that users' conversations remain private, and reporting a chat as spam only shares sender details and recent messages with Google and carriers.

Clone Robotics, a Polish startup, has unveiled Protoclone, a human-like robot designed with synthetic muscles and a skeletal structure mimicking human anatomy. The Protoclone is described as a faceless android with over 200 degrees of freedom, more than 1,000 artificial muscle fibers (Myofibers), and 500 sensors. According to the company, Protoclone operates with systems that closely replicate human muscular, skeletal, vascular, and nervous systems, even featuring 206 bones made from polymers.
Reactions to the Protoclone have been mixed, with some social media users expressing unease over its lifelike movements and appearance. Clone Robotics plans to make the android available for preorder later this year. The company envisions the robot could perform household chores in the future. Protoclone uses a pneumatic system to control its artificial muscles but the final product will use hydraulics. The robot uses a system of sensors linked to four cameras to navigate.

Google has released the first public beta of Android 16 for Pixel devices, following two developer beta versions last year. This new beta introduces 'Live Updates', a feature similar to Apple's 'Live Activities', which will display dynamic lockscreen notifications for ride-sharing, food delivery, and navigation. This limited implementation of real-time updates on the lockscreen is a key focus of the release, contrasting with Samsung's 'Now Bar' and Apple's broader 'Live Activities' which support a wider array of apps. For now, Android 16's version will be focused on progress trackers only for limited apps.
The Android 16 public beta also includes a restriction on developers' ability to control app window sizes, aiming to make all apps work seamlessly on devices regardless of display size, particularly tablets and foldables. This change forces apps to open in full-screen and be resizable for multitasking, with exemptions for games and a temporary opt-out available for this beta release. Further additions include support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec for high-quality video, scene detection for night mode in camera apps, and improved accessibility with mandatory field indicators.
