Intel is undergoing a significant restructuring process under its new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, as the company faces economic pressures and a challenging market landscape. The restructuring includes workforce reductions and a flattening of leadership tiers, aiming to streamline operations and foster innovation. Tan emphasized the necessity of "hard decisions" to put Intel on a solid footing for the future, acknowledging that the company's organizational complexity and bureaucracies have hindered agility. The goal is to redefine Intel's portfolio and optimize products for emerging AI workloads, focusing on delivering competitive products and meeting customer needs.

The company's recent financial performance underscores the need for change. Intel reported flat year-over-year revenue of $12.7 billion for Q1 2025, but losses deepened to $821 million. The gross margin declined to 36.9%, impacted by product mix, startup costs for the 18A ramp-up, and macroeconomic uncertainties. Intel is forecasting a Q2 revenue contraction of up to 12%, citing "very fluid trade policies" in the U.S. The Client Computing Group (CCG) revenues also fell 8% year-over-year, due to weaker PC demand and competitive pricing.

Despite the challenges, Tan remains optimistic about Intel's long-term prospects, drawing parallels to the rebounds of companies like IBM, Microsoft, Apple, and AMD. He is focusing on better execution, operational efficiency, and empowering engineers to create innovative products. Intel is also revamping its AI strategy to align with the rising demand for compute, particularly in the area of agentic AI, aiming to develop full-stack AI solutions for enterprise customers. However, Tan cautioned that the changes will take time and that there are "no quick fixes" to the company's current situation.
