Semiconductor designer Arm is set to launch its own chip this year, marking a significant shift in its traditional business model. This move comes after Arm onboarded Meta as one of its first customers. The UK-based company, owned by SoftBank, intends to unveil the chip as early as this summer.

The new chip, designed to serve as a central processing unit for servers in large data centers, will be customizable for clients like Meta. Production will be outsourced to manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). This strategic move positions Arm as a potential competitor to its major customers, potentially disrupting the $700 billion semiconductor industry and putting it on a collision course with companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA. Meta has also begun developing both hardware and software for AI-powered humanoid robots.
