Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, has launched its Grok chatbot as a free app for iOS users in the US. The app allows users to access xAI's Grok 2 language model, enabling them to ask questions, create images, and analyze uploaded photos. Grok sets itself apart by pulling real-time information from X, formerly known as Twitter, and the web to provide current answers. This release marks xAI's continued effort to compete in the conversational AI space, particularly against rivals like ChatGPT. Currently, the app is only available to iPhone users within the United States.
In addition to the app launch, xAI is also making significant advancements with the development of Grok-3. It has been reported that xAI is utilizing 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs to power the training of the Grok-3 model which is rumored to be the 'most powerful base model in existence'. This massive computational undertaking indicates a strong commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities. The pre-training for Grok-3 has recently been completed, and the model is expected to be released in the next 3-4 weeks, raising the question if it will outperform existing competitors and also resolve the question about whether additional computing yields diminishing returns.
