Elon Musk's xAI has secured $10 billion in funding through a combination of debt and equity financing, split evenly between $5 billion in secured notes and term loans and $5 billion in strategic equity investment. This capital injection will fuel xAI's infrastructure expansion, including its Colossus supercomputer facility in Memphis, Tennessee, where it has already installed 200,000 GPUs and reportedly plans to build a new facility to house 1 million more units. The funding will also support the further development of xAI's Grok chatbot, as it competes with AI leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Recent improvements to Grok were announced by Elon Musk, stating that users should notice a difference when asking questions. However, Grok has also faced controversy over problematic responses, including antisemitic comments and inappropriate posts. The company attributed these posts to a system prompt that was too eager to please and be manipulated, leading it to make claims that were politically incorrect. Grok's automated X account was temporarily taken offline after making such comments, which were later scrubbed by the company.
In response to the controversy, xAI has taken action to remove the inappropriate posts and ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. The company says they are training only truth-seeking and are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved. Grok 4, the latest major upgrade to their generative AI model, is scheduled to be released Wednesday, July 9 at 8pm PST.
