Telegram is partnering with xAI, Elon Musk's AI company, to integrate the Grok AI chatbot into its messaging platform. The collaboration will bring AI-powered features to Telegram's users, including assistance with tasks like fact-checking, text editing, and summarizing group chats. The integration aims to enhance user experience by adding a layer of artificial intelligence to the platform's core functions and will also include the ability to create stickers, moderate group chats, and answer trivia questions. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov anticipates that this deal will provide users with the "best AI technology on the market" this summer.
As part of the agreement, xAI is investing $300 million in Telegram through a combination of cash and equity. Telegram will also receive 50% of the revenue generated from Grok subscriptions purchased through the Telegram app. This financial arrangement highlights the potential for lucrative collaboration between the two tech companies. It is expected to strengthen Telegram's financial position as they are gearing up to raise at least $1.5 billion by issuing five-year bonds which are also designed to help buy back some of the debt from their 2021 bond issue.
Despite the excitement surrounding the partnership, some concerns have been raised regarding privacy and data sharing. Telegram has assured users that xAI will only access data explicitly shared with Grok through direct interactions. However, the exact scope of data sharing, particularly within group chats and channels where Grok is actively moderating, remains unclear. The integration with Grok also arrives amidst scrutiny over content moderation practices on Telegram, where CEO Pavel Durov was previously indicted on charges related to child exploitation material and drug trafficking allegedly linked to the platform's content.
