Google is ramping up its fight against online scams by implementing artificial intelligence across multiple platforms including Search, Chrome, and Android. The company aims to make fraudulent activities significantly more difficult for cybercriminals. This initiative builds upon Google's existing AI-driven defenses, blocking hundreds of millions of scam results daily and identifying more fraudulent pages than ever before. The integration of Gemini Nano allows for instant detection of high-risk websites, adapting to new and evolving threats in real time and providing an additional layer of defense against online scams.

AI has long been used by Google to detect and block scams such as fake tech support, fraudulent financial services, and phishing links. Recent updates to AI classifiers have enabled the company to detect twenty times more scam pages, substantially improving the quality of search results by reducing user exposure to harmful sites. A specific example highlighted Google's success in curtailing scams targeting airline customer service queries. Dedicated AI protections led to a reduction of scam-related attacks by over 80%. Similar measures in 2024 decreased scams impersonating official sites like visa or government service pages by more than 70%.

Beyond Google Search, the company is expanding its AI defenses to protect users on Chrome, Android, and other communication channels. Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode now utilizes Gemini Nano, a lightweight on-device AI model, to instantly identify scams, even those unseen before. This technology will soon expand to Android devices. Furthermore, Chrome on Android now uses AI warnings to flag suspicious or misleading website notifications, allowing users to unsubscribe or review denied content to avoid scams. AI is also being deployed in messaging and phone call protection to block sophisticated scams in calls and texts.
