Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has recently highlighted the potential for Agentic AI to dramatically reshape the software landscape, predicting a possible decline in the traditional Software as a Service (SaaS) model. This vision involves AI agents taking over business logic, currently handled by SaaS applications, and performing tasks across multiple data repositories. Nadella envisions a future where users may not need individual applications like Excel, as AI agents can handle complex tasks and data management, replacing the need for traditional business logic driven by CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) databases.
This shift towards Agentic AI is not just a Microsoft perspective. Other tech leaders, including Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, also believe AI agents are revolutionizing business operations and productivity, potentially unlocking a massive market. At IBM's THINK event, the company introduced new technologies designed to help businesses build AI agents using their own enterprise data, highlighting the industry's focus on integrating AI into core business processes. The expectation is that over a billion applications will emerge by 2028, putting pressure on businesses to scale across increasingly fragmented environments, requiring a heavy level of AI support.
Microsoft is actively integrating AI agents into its Dynamics 365 ERP solutions, with new agents available for public preview, designed to streamline processes and reduce manual effort. These agents, acting as "digital colleagues," are designed to augment how people work and automate tasks, such as lead generation, order management, and account reconciliation, shifting towards AI-first operations. Simultaneously, Microsoft is exploring how AI can accelerate fusion research, seeking a sustainable energy source to power the energy-intensive AI technologies.
