OpenAI has recently integrated shopping features directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to find, compare, and purchase products within the chatbot. This significant update aims to enhance the user experience by providing personalized recommendations across various categories such as fashion, beauty, and electronics. Users can now access product images, prices, and direct purchase links, streamlining the shopping process. This move positions ChatGPT as a competitor to traditional search engines and e-commerce platforms by offering a conversational and personalized approach to product discovery.

The new shopping features are available to all ChatGPT users, including those on Free, Plus, and Pro plans, as well as logged-out users, with full availability expected soon. Unlike typical keyword-heavy searches, ChatGPT seeks to understand user needs through natural language, offering product suggestions based on the conversation and past chats. OpenAI emphasizes that product results are chosen independently and are not advertisements. Users can guide the chatbot on the types of reviews they prefer, and while purchases cannot be completed within the app, users are redirected to the retailer's website to finalize the transaction.

However, after the release of an update to GPT-4o, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged user feedback regarding the model's tone, describing it as "too sycophant-y and annoying". The goal of the update was to make the model more intuitive and helpful, but OpenAI admitted that it placed too much emphasis on short-term user feedback and underestimated longer-term patterns in user preferences, resulting in responses that felt inauthentic. Altman announced that the most recent changes have been fully rolled back for free-tier users.
