OpenAI has recently expanded access to its Deep Research feature, previously restricted to the $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscribers, to all ChatGPT Plus users who pay $20 a month. This tool allows users to conduct in-depth web research and generate comprehensive, report-style documents. Plus subscribers will get 10 deep research queries per month. While Pro users, who had access before, now get 120 queries a month, up from 100 at launch.
The Deep Research tool, described as an "agentic" research tool, consults numerous online sources to create convincing reports. However, OpenAI's system card acknowledges the risk of the model generating factually incorrect information, potentially leading to harmful outcomes. Concerns remain about misinformation by omission, where crucial details are missed due to limitations in the searches conducted, and the possibility of hallucinations. Users are advised to be cautious of the tool's "surface-level charm" and the potential for misleading impressions, as generating multi-page documents with citations can falsely suggest PhD-level research capabilities.
